Song Lyric Sunday
It’s another song from Matt Good this week. I can’t help it, this is my current favourite song. It also contains my favourite line of all time, “You try but you fail ’cause you’re bad at life.” Come on. That is excellent. This song amazes me because of its simplicity and beauty and truth. The lines in the first verse, “There’s a painting of Jesus wandering/For a dart board/You know he’s seen you naked a million times” is just… true. I cannot explain why this song strikes me so, but I hope you enjoy it as well.
Fated by Matthew Good Band
Lo-Fi B Sides from 1999 (internet says 97, Matt says 99… I’m going with Matt)
There’s a space man in my basement
There’s an IV keeping time beside my bed
And a painting of Jesus wandering
For a dartboard
You know he’s seen you naked a million times, a million times
I long to be dead
Sleep with the fishes under the sea
They can swim through my head
And stop all the traffic jams
Stop all the traffic jams
And there’ll be no light tonight
If I’m fated
There’s a cartoon killer in my living room
Cut you open like candy and pull out your little wound
Like TV dinners for the third world
Amputee dancing girls
You try but you fail ’cause you’re bad at life
And good in a vacuum
I long to be dead
And sleep with the fishes under the sea
They can swim through my head
And stop all the traffic jams
Stop all the traffic jams
And there’ll be no light tonight
If I’m fated
If I’m fated
If I’m fated…
This week’s video is of Matt Good playing Fated live in Nanaimo in 2006. It’s lovely.
