I wrote this poem a few months ago when a friend and I were discussing how stupid it is to tell someone to write a poem. For those of you that are grammar obsessives much like myself, you may notice a discrepancy in the words (metaphor, analogy, simile) and their literal definitions. I know it’s not perfect, it’s meant to illustrate a point.

Remonstrance is Futile

what about an exercise
in the utmost of futility
to use a metaphor as is necessity,
this would be like leading a horse to water
but being horribly unable to make it drink
and stop now, what’s that
an analogy you say
what I’ve written
not a metaphor at all
well I disagree
and I’m afraid that what you found
was just a plain simile
although I would argue
that my statement could be either
to the discriminating mind
